Retail PLM has to manage products before they become sellable items, while the range is still changing around them.
Generic PLM can control product information, but fashion retail adds seasonal range decisions, colorways, rapid sampling, material reuse and supplier coordination. The system must fit that rhythm.
Start with the range
Merchandising and design need to shape option count, category balance, price architecture and color before every product is complete. Approved choices should create or update the development record.
Handle style, color and size cleanly
Fashion teams work across a style with colorway and size-specific decisions. Test how the system prevents duplicate data while preserving genuine variation.
Connect materials and suppliers
Approved materials, supplier capabilities, costs and lead times influence the range. Those records should be reusable and visible where product decisions are made.
Keep sampling and revisions controlled
The sample record should show the specification used, comments, measurements, decision and next stage. Suppliers should receive one current release.
Carry approved data downstream
ERP, ecommerce and reporting systems need approved product, supplier, cost and item data. Define the handoff rather than making product teams re-enter it.
A retail PLM should make seasonal product work easier to see and govern. If the team still rebuilds the range, samples and supplier status elsewhere, the platform is only holding part of the truth.
